Name:
Petra Curtis
Occupation: Curator of ‘Our Show Home’
Location: Dulwich and East Sussex
There has been an enormous increase in
demand for mid-century furniture and
collectables mixed with modern designs.
Mid-century design is the eclectic way
people dress their homes today, and
offers so much for the way we want to
live – simple sleek lines, beautifully
crafted wood, quality and workmanship.
Sourcing antiques of the future can be a
minefield. It's very difficult to say
who to watch out for, as it depends on
whether you are buying as an investment,
or purely because you love the item.
Good design, quality and a maker’s stamp
will always provide a good return.
Mid-century Modern Shows are designed as
an unpretentious one stop shop for busy
people who appreciate collecting
beautiful pieces for their homes. It’s
the place to find everything from an
original Eames rocker, to a contemporary
ceramic from a hot young British
designer.

Name: Elizabeth Baer
Occupation: Textiles Dealer
Location: Pennard House, Shepton Mallet
Colour and shape are still the two most
important elements in home decoration.
Colour has an immediate impact and the
first look and atmosphere of any room is
set by dominant shades. The carpet,
walls and curtains are therefore the
basic items to begin with. I always
advise clients to choose a favourite
picture or object whose colour-mix
pleases them. Transferred to a room, the
colour scheme is almost sure to be a
success. Old French curtains make
perfect ‘mood boards’ for modern
schemes, and juxtaposed with finishing
touches such as braid, discreet fringes,
and lampshades, will emphasise any
colour harmony. While new items can be
very expensive, searching through the
stock of antique dealers, fairs and
charity shops can yield bargains with a
quality superior to modern high street
materials.

Name:
Roger Lamb
Occupation: Antique Dealer
Location: Roger Lamb Antiques,
Stow-on-the-Wold
Over the past 20 years, I have
frequently worked with interior
designers in the choice and placement of
fine period furniture in homes. Antique
dealers have a special rapport with
interior designers. While antique
dealers often make the mistake of
assuming that what sold well last year,
will sell equally well this year,
interior designers often ask for the
impossible – such as a cabinet or chest
in a size that was never made!
Home
interiors have changed radically and I
see the role of antique dealers
increasing over the next few years; the
pendulum has already swung back from the
minimalism of the early 20th century to
a more individual and discerning, unique
interior where a few well chosen antique
pieces are set against a modern classic
interior.

Name:
Michael Gaitskell
Occupation: Potter
Location: Mill Pottery, Wootton
Courtenay
Exmoor Surrounded by a culture
preoccupied with commercialisation,
intrusive media, and superficial
soundbite monotony, interiors should be
a place of personal expression and
artistic repose to refresh the mind and
spirit. Form, colour, and texture play a
vital part. Combining sculptural form
with decorative, tactile interest,
attractive handmade pots exactly fulfil
these requirements. Calm and still,
their physical presence is appealing to
eye and hand. Made of the very stuff of
our Planet, and representing the skill
of the hand, and artistic imagination of
the mind combined with technological
wizardry, they uphold humanity's most
ancient creative tradition. Pots have a
symbolic significance that will enhance
any interior.

Name:
Jacqueline Hollister
Occupation: Art Consultant
Location: Hybrid, Honiton
Art enriches our
lives by lifting our everyday experience
from the banal to the pleasurable. If we
can create an environment where we enjoy
our surroundings, then we can soothe our
brows, stimulate our minds, and feed our
souls. Contemporary art, moreover, works
in the present. Created in the here and
now it reflects our own experience
overtly and indirectly. There is a need
to embrace the present. By all means
honour the past as well, but the
inclusion of contemporary pieces in your
home invigorates the space and creates a
living dynamic. By supporting and
sustaining artists working today, we can
keep British art, and our own
idiosyncratic expression, thriving.

Name: Sharon Fletcher
Occupation: Interior Design
Location: Designed Interiors, Salisbury
The myths surrounding Interior Design
need to be dispelled! It should not cost
vast sums of money, as professional
interior designers are experienced in
finding the best products at the most
reasonable prices. Practicality and
affordability are essential if they are
to remain in business. A good interior
designer will translate your desires
into a look that most fits your needs,
and works with the property, rather than
imposing their vision on your home.
A
finished project will always have
something of ‘you’ in it! Unless you
specifically desire otherwise, no
interior designer will replace
everything in your home. I work from
concept to completion, providing an
elegant home in the best possible taste,
based on the maxim that ‘a house you can
buy, a home I can create for you.

Name: Mark
Turner
Occupation: Gilder & Restorer
Location: Turners of Topsham
Gilded furniture
has always given the overall impression
of status, quality, and importance in
all interior styles and periods
throughout the ages. Gilded designs have
been executed in almost every style, and
are usually of a high quality of
craftsmanship due to the amount of time,
and level of skills, needed to
manufacture such items in this
technique. A more worn, or distressed
appearance often enhances these gilded
items, which provide an interesting
decorative aspect to any interior. A
decorative mirror not only adds drama to
the room, but can also be a great way of
bringing added daylight into a space.
