Known
locally as, ‘Stow-on- the-Wold, where the wind blows
cold,’ after the 18th century rhyme, this is the highest
of the Cotswold towns; but have no fear for Stow offers
a warm welcome to all. A delightful town, it boasts one
of the highest concentrations of antiques outside of
London, with just the right mix of group shops (with at
least 30 dealers in each, guaranteed variety, and
sensible pricing), alongside 20th century specialists,
art galleries, and book shops. In addition, it is
renowned for quality hotels, B&Bs and tea shops found
around the market square.
Getting there: There are direct road links to the
M40, M5, M1 and M4 motorways. The town lies on the A429,
between Bristol (50 miles), Birmingham (45 miles), and
Oxford (30 miles).
|
|
Parking: There are two main car parks in
Stow-on-the-Wold. The largest by far is The Fosseway, on
the eastern edge of the town, with 100 spaces, and it’s
free of charge. There is a smaller car park by the
Maugesbury Road but you have to pay for this one. There
are also free spaces in the Market Square but you’ll
have difficulty finding a space as a lot of people want
to park there. If you can’t find parking in these car
parks, there is also roadside parking in many places
around the town. |
